Q. Do you have a favourite smart thinking book (and why that book)?

Million Dollar Consulting Toolkit - Step-by-Step Guidance, Checklists, Templates and Samples from The Million Dollar Consultant by Alan Weiss.
This is a book for business consultants to help them escape the 'pricing by the hour' trap and start charging what they're worth for their services. I read it 20 years ago when I was a partner in a small internet agency. Back then I applied its principles to the way we dealt with our clients, but even when I was no longer in that line of work (shortly after that point in my life I set up my current company, Digital DJ Tips, teaching DJing online), its message has continued to resonate with me. Basically, it taught me not to underestimate the impact we are able to have on other people when we do work that matters, and thus how to avoid undervaluing yourself.

Q. What's the most recent smart thinking book you've read (and how would you rate it)?

Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity by Peter Attia.
Peter Attia teaches strategies to live a longer, healthier life, based around exercise, nutrition and so on. I've always found him a bit too 'Silicon Valley' and in-depth when I've happened across his podcasts, so I decided to read his recent book to see if he distills it all down into more bite-sized insights. Indeed he does (and honestly, I didn't learn too much, not to say it taught me nothing). But what I really enjoyed was the final part of the book, when he opens up about his personal journey. Here is a flawed man on a steep learning curve, and that really resonated with me. It's a brave book, because ultimately, it poses the question: What's the point of living to 100 if you're healthy but miserable?

Peter Attia

Description from Bookshop.org:
This is the ultimate manual for living better and longer.

For all its successes, mainstream medicine has failed to make much progress against the diseases of ageing that kill most people: heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, and type 2 diabetes. Too often, it intervenes with treatments too late, prolonging lifespan at the expense of quality of life. Dr Peter Attia, the world's top longevity expert who is featured on Chris Hemsworth's National Geographic documentary LIMITLESS, believes we must replace this outdated framework with a personalised, proactive strategy for longevity.

This isn't 'biohacking,' it's science: a well-founded strategic approach to extending lifespan while improving our physical, cognitive and emotional health, making each decade better than the one before. With Outlive's practical advice and roadmap, you can plot a different path for your life, one that lets you outlive your genes to make each decade better than the one before.

Q. Do you have a favourite childhood book?

Mad Things to Make from 'Vision on' by Wilf Lunn.
Vision On was a kids' TV programme in the 70s in the UK, and Wilf Lunn was its resident inventor, always coming up with crazy things for kids to make at home with pipe cleaners, cardboard tubes, yogurt pots and so on. I lost my childhood copy of this and actually found a second-hand one recently. It's pleasingly impractical and silly, with projects entitled things like 'Recreate the old-time sounds with a horse clippety-clop machine'.

Q. Do you prefer reading on paper, Kindle or listening to an audiobook?

Dislike audiobooks as I can't easily bookmark or take notes. Kindle for day-to-day reading (or rather, an unlocked Kobo, because I despise being tied to Amazon's bookstore). I'll sometimes put digital books onto my reMarkable tablet too if I know I'll want to quote from and reference them, because of the ease of adding handwritten notes. But also, I'll often buy the physical book if I think it's got 'family appeal', popping it on the shelf in the hope my kids may pick it up should the internet go down one day or similar, which I suspect is what it would take!

Q. Do you have a favourite bookshop (and why that shop)?

Sadly, no. There are no bookshops left where I live, and much as I hate it, when it comes to ordering actual physical books, Amazon rules. I spent many happy hours in bookshops over the decades, but I can't remember the last time I went into one to be honest. Probably in an airport terminal waiting for a plane - isn't that where most people last bought any kind of physical book 'in person', so it were?
