The 6 Emotionally Intelligent Languages for Couples: Transforming the way you Speak, Listen and Love
What if the greatest challenge in your relationship isn't love, but how you communicate it?
The 6 Emotionally Intelligent Languages for Couples is a practical and accessible guide designed to help couples speak, listen, and connect more effectively. Drawing on counselling insight and real-life stories, Sam O. Opeche introduces six essential communication languages that build emotional safety, clarity, repair, and shared vision.
Rather than focusing on quick fixes, this book helps couples understand how words land emotionally, not just what is said. Readers will learn how to affirm one another, respond with empathy, communicate clearly, repair after conflict, remain curious, and dream together again.
This book is for couples who care deeply but feel stuck in misunderstanding, distance, or repeated conflict. With practical exercises and relatable examples, it offers tools couples can use immediately to strengthen connection and restore trust.
This is not about speaking more, it's about speaking with emotional intelligence.

Q. Do you have a favourite smart thinking book (and why that book)?
Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. Description from Bookshop.org: (All links earn commission from purchases)
'Think and Grow Rich' by Napoleon Hill is my favourite Smart Thinking book.
What makes this book stand out to me is that it goes beyond the idea of money and success as purely external achievements. It teaches the power of mindset, purpose, faith, persistence, and disciplined thinking. One of the biggest lessons I took from the book is that our thoughts shape our direction and ultimately influence our outcomes in life.
I also appreciate how practical and timeless the principles are. Concepts like desire, definiteness of purpose, resilience in the face of setbacks, and surrounding yourself with the right people are just as relevant today as when the book was first written. It’s a book that challenges you to think intentionally, believe bigger, and take consistent action toward your goals.
Think and Grow Rich
Discover 13 powerful principles behind every great success story – and how you can use them to change your life.
Bestselling motivational author Napoleon Hill devoted 25 years to finding out how the wealthy became that way.
After interviewing over 500 of the most affluent men and women of his time, including Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and John D. Rockefeller, he uncovered the secret to great wealth: if we can learn to think like the rich, we can start to behave like them.
In Think and Grow Rich, he offers thirteen simple steps to show you how to achieve your goals, change your life, and join the ranks of the rich and successful, including:
Faith (true belief you can achieve your goal through visualisation)
Autosuggestion (influencing the subconscious mind)
Decision (overcoming procrastination and being decisive)
Now in this updated edition, Dr Arthur R. Pell provides examples of men and women who, in recent times, exemplify the principles that Hill promoted. With the success stories of top achievers such as Bill Gates and Steven Spielberg, he proves that Hill's philosophies are as valid today as they ever were.
Backed by decades of success stories, Think and Grow Rich offers priceless advice on positive thinking and overcoming adversity to help you to achieve your goals and drive success.

Emotional Resilience: Know what it takes to be agile, adaptable and perform at your best by Geetu Bharwaney. Description from Bookshop.org: (All links earn commission from purchases)
The most recent Smart Thinking book I’ve read is Emotional Resilience by Geetu Bharwaney.
I would rate it a solid 9/10 because it is deeply practical and insightful. The book helped me better understand the connection between emotional intelligence, self-awareness, communication, and personal growth. I found the principles both personally transformative and highly applicable in relationships, leadership, and everyday interactions. It’s one of those books that not only informs you intellectually but also challenges you to grow emotionally and relationally.

Q. Do you have a favourite childhood book?
Want to Stay Alive? by James Hadley Chase. Description from Bookshop.org: (All links earn commission from purchases)
One of my favourite childhood authors was James Hadley Chase. I was drawn to his books because of the suspense, fast-paced storytelling, and the way he kept readers engaged from beginning to end.
I will never forget how one character, Tom Lepski, particularly stood out to me. He was the flamboyant police officer whose astute awareness, sharp instincts, and dogged determination to follow every trail until he uncovered the truth fascinated me. His persistence and investigative mind inspired me to become thorough in my work as an author: to stop at nothing until I understand the problem my book addresses and, most importantly, to ensure a clear pathway for readers to navigate toward a solution. I admired the way he combined intuition, courage, and relentless pursuit of the truth, even when the odds were against him.
Want to Stay Alive?
One night Max puts on his wolf suit and makes mischief of one kind and another, so his mother calls him 'Wild Thing' and sends him to bed without his supper.
That night a forest begins to grow in Max's room and an ocean rushes by with a boat to take Max to the place where the wild things are.
Max tames the wild things and crowns himself as their king, and then the wild rumpus begins!
But when Max has sent the monsters to bed, and everything is quiet, he starts to feel lonely and realises it is time to sail home to the place where someone loves him best of all.

Q. Do you prefer reading on paper, Kindle or listening to an audiobook?
Although my default preference is reading physical books on paper, because I enjoy the feel of holding a book and being able to fully immerse myself in the reading experience, I do also occasionally enjoy reading on Kindle and listening to audiobooks. Each format has its own advantages depending on the situation: physical books for focus and connection, Kindle for convenience and portability, and audiobooks for learning while on the move.
Q. Do you have a favourite bookshop (and why that shop)?
Waterstones
My favourite bookstore is Waterstones. What I enjoy most about it is the atmosphere and the breadth of books available across different genres. I appreciate being able to walk through the shelves, discover new titles, and spend time exploring books that inspire growth, creativity, leadership, relationships, and personal development.
There’s also something special about the calm and reflective environment of a good bookstore, and Waterstones has always felt like a place where ideas, learning, and imagination come together.
Many thanks to Sam for recommending an influential set of books! Please don't forget to check out The 6 Emotionally Intelligent Languages for Couples: Transforming the way you Speak, Listen and Love.
