Q. Do you have a favourite smart thinking book (and why that book)?

Key Person of Influence: The Five-Step Method to Become One of the Most Highly Valued and Highly Paid People in Your Industry by Daniel Priestley.
Daniel Priestley’s Key Person of Influence is my go-to classic for smart thinking entrepreneurs. It summarises the five pillars small business growth through which a Founder becomes the Key Person of Influence in their field. It’s Five Ps are Pitch – know how to give the perfect pitch, long or short, in any situation; Publish – obviously I agree that writing a book to build your business is an essential step in defining your expertise and authority; Product – a clear and simple product eco-system allows your ideal clients to buy your services with no friction; Profile – we all need to stand out online these days; and Partnership – working with the right people inside and outside your own business brings the best results. Although the book is over 12 years old, the premise it sets out is timeless.

Description from Bookshop.org:
To make the journey into The Power of Now we will need to leave our analytical mind and its false created self, the ego, behind. Although the journey is challenging, Eckhart Tolle offers simple language and a question and answer format to show us how to silence our thoughts and create a liberated life.

Surrender to the present moment, where problems do not exist. It is here we find our joy, are able to embrace our true selves and discover that we are already complete and perfect. If we are able to be fully present and take each step in the Now we will be opening ourselves to the transforming experience of The Power of Now.

Q. What's the most recent smart thinking book you've read (and how would you rate it)?

The Authority Gap: Why Women Are Still Taken Less Seriously Than Men, and What We Can Do About It by Mary Anne Sieghart.
Mary Anne Sieghart’s The Authority Gap: Why women are still taken less seriously than men, and what we can do about it is not that recent, but it still stays in my mind as one of the smartest books I’ve read in the last few years. The Authority Gap provides a startling perspective – that all women are aware of - on the unseen bias at work in our everyday lives, to reveal the scale of the gap that still persists between men and women. It has a wealth of data, presented with precision and insight, and includes interviews with pioneering women such as Baroness Hale, Mary Beard and Bernadine Evaristo. It’s a positive feminist take on how to address and counteract systemic sexism in ways that benefit us all.

Description from Bookshop.org:
The Authority Gap provides a startling perspective on the unseen bias at work in our everyday lives, to reveal the scale of the gap that still persists between men and women. Would you believe that US Supreme Court Justices are interrupted four times more often than male ones... 96% of the time by men? Or that British parents, when asked to estimate their child's IQ will place their son at 115 and their daughter at 107?

Marshalling a wealth of data with precision and insight, and including interviews with pioneering women such as Baroness Hale, Mary Beard and Bernadine Evaristo, Mary Ann exposes unconscious bias in this fresh feminist take on how to address and counteract systemic sexism in ways that benefit us all.

Q. Do you have a favourite childhood book?

Mary Poppins by P.L. Travers.
So many to choose from… I loved the Mary Poppins series by P L Travers, which are so different to the saccharine version of the musical with Julie Andrews. In the books, Mary Poppins is a highly eccentric woman who literally blows in on the wind to change the lives of the children and adults she chooses to interact with. She is single-minded, abrasive, and takes no sh*t from either children or adults, and yet is full of empathy, understands what children need to thrive, and has a host of magical tools and friends who provide surreal adventures for her charges.
As a mentor, I’d like to be Mary Poppins!
And the books are beautifully written, evocative of Edwardian London life and so imaginative!

Description from Bookshop.org:
Discover the joy and wonder of Mary Poppins in the classic adventures!
This slipcase, using original artwork, contains all six original Mary Poppins stories: Mary Poppins, Mary Poppins Comes Back, Mary Poppins Opens the Door, Mary Poppins in the Park, Mary Poppins in Cherry Tree Lane / Mary Poppins and the House Next Door (2-in-1 edition).

When their new nanny, Mary Poppins, arrives on a gust of the East Wind, greets their mother, and slides up the banister, Jane and Michael’s lives are turned magically upside down. You can now read all six of these wonderfully original tales about Jane and Michael’s adventures with the magical Mary Poppins. In each book Mary takes the children on the most extraordinary outings: to a fun fair inside a pavement picture; to visit Uncle Andrew who floats up to the ceiling when he laughs; on a spectacular trip to see the Man-in-the-Moon! With her strict but fair, no-nonsense attitude, combined with amazing magical powers, things are never straightforward with Mary Poppins! But she has only promised to stay until the wind changes… Beautifully presented in a slipcase with original artwork, this is the perfect gift to be enjoyed all year round.

Q. Do you prefer reading on paper, Kindle or listening to an audiobook?

I listen to endless fiction on audiobooks – at least one a week. I find audio allows me the best access into other worlds, and I can listen while doing other less demanding tasks like driving, dog-walking, and domestic stuff. As a publisher of business books, I read a lot online – mostly manuscripts and typesets on my screen, and sometimes other authors’ work on kindle. I keep more focused on non-fiction work this way. I read the occasional book in print either fiction or non fiction – but I like to read my weekly subscription to the New Statesman in print, cover to cover, partly so I can do the crossword!

Q. Do you have a favourite bookshop (and why that shop)?

The Aldeburgh Bookshop
The Aldeburgh Bookshop is an amazingly well stocked shop for a small seaside town. I love it for that and also for nostalgic reasons. I spent summer holidays there every year as a child and through my teens, and spent hours browsing and occasionally buying all sorts of books at all ages.
