Penguin WIRED Guides
Penguin Random House have partnered with WIRED to produce a vital new series of distinctive and accessible one-stop guides to the technologies and big idea that will shape the future. The lovely people at Penguin Random House gave me a sneak peek at the first three books in this fascinating series, which I found to be informative and considered primers on the topics of Artificial Intelligence, Climate Change, and The Future of Medicine.
While perfect for the inquisitive reader who wants an overview of each topic, the books are also expansive enough to include detail and points of view that illuminate the topic to familiar readers also, in an efficiently compact format. Check out my reviews of the first three books in the series that are out now, and details of the next three books, Quantum Computing, Cryptocurrency, and The Future of Food, available in June, July, and September 2021.
Starting off with a well rounded shot of history, this book dives straight into a very practical account of the current applications of AI. It covers how the technology is being used for the benefit of business and society alike, and sometimes not, before addressing the very real issues of governance, regulation, and accountability. The book finishes by framing a pragmatic view on the future of artificial intelligence as being rooted in how we shape the ethical use of the technology in the present. Books about climate change can often be difficult reading when the scale of the task ahead of us comes into view, but not so with this book. Serving as a playbook on how to address each emissions area, the book delivers solution after solution on how each industry can be augmented, upgraded, or reimagined in order to reduce emissions. A fascinating and sometimes mind-blowing look into how the technology of today is turning science fiction into science fact in the field of medicine. The book uses a series of case studies to demonstrate where innovation is taking place in the present and how these advancements can improve our health care at scale in the future.
