Q. Do you have a favourite smart thinking book (and why that book)?
Awaken the Giant Within: How to Take Immediate Control of Your Mental, Emotional, Physical and Financial Destiny! by Tony Robbins. Description from Bookshop.org: (All links earn commission from purchases. Prices accurate at time of writing)
One of my favourites is Awaken the Giant Within by Anthony Robbins. As someone deeply involved in regenerative medicine, this book aligns perfectly with my belief in unlocking the body's own potential for healing. Robbins talks about taking control of your life, and I view regenerative treatments in a similar way—we’re empowering patients to take control of their recovery by awakening their body’s natural ability to regenerate, not just repair.

Q. What's the most recent smart thinking book you've read (and how would you rate it)?
Solve for Happy: Engineer Your Path to Joy by Mo Gawdat. Description from Bookshop.org: (All links earn commission from purchases. Prices accurate at time of writing)
The most recent smart thinking book I read is Solve for Happy by Mo Gawdat. I’d rate it 9/10. The book approaches happiness as an equation, which I find similar to how I view the science of regeneration. It’s not just about treatment but creating a pathway to health and well-being. Gawdat’s engineering mindset complements my focus on breaking down complex problems into solvable steps—whether that’s regenerating cartilage or solving for happiness!
Solve for Happy: Engineer Your Path to Joy
Solve for Happy is the equation for happiness. A startlingly original book about creating and maintaining happiness, written by a top Google executive with an engineer's training and fondness for thoroughly analyzing a problem.
Mo Gawdat, a remarkable thinker whose gifts had landed him top positions in half a dozen companies and who – in his spare time – had created significant wealth, realized that he was desperately unhappy. A lifelong learner, he attacked the problem as an engineer would, examining all the provable facts and scrupulously following logic. When he was finished, he had discovered the equation for enduring happiness.
Ten years later, that research saved him from despair when his college-aged son, Ali – also intellectually gifted – died during routine surgery. In dealing with the loss, Mo found his mission: he would pull off the type of 'moonshot' that he and his Google [X] colleagues were always aiming for: he would help ten million people become happier by pouring his happiness principles into a book and spreading its message around the world.
One of Solve for Happy's key premises is that happiness is a default state. If we shape expectations to acknowledge the full range of possible events, unhappiness is on its way to being defeated. To steer clear of unhappiness traps, we must dispel the six illusions that cloud our thinking (e.g., the illusion of time, of control, and of fear); overcome the brain's seven deadly defects (e.g., the tendency to exaggerate, label, and filter), and embrace five ultimate truths (e.g., change is real, now is real, unconditional love is real).
By means of several highly original thought experiments, Mo helps readers find enduring contentment by questioning some of the most fundamental aspects of their existence.

Q. Do you have a favourite childhood book?
Roy of the Rovers: The Best of the 1980s: Who Shot Roy Race? by Tom Tully. Description from Bookshop.org: (All links earn commission from purchases. Prices accurate at time of writing)
As a kid, I loved football comics from Hong Kong, especially ones about winning the World Cup. I suppose the idea of regeneration started young - teams regenerating their strategies to win matches, just like joints regenerating to return to peak function. Plus, every surgeon needs a bit of flair, and those comics certainly taught me about dramatic comebacks!
Roy of the Rovers: The Best of the 1980s: Who Shot Roy Race?
MELCHESTER MELTDOWN! Relive the best Roy of the Rovers stories from the 1990s in this exciting anthology of reprinted classic strips, celebrating over 65 years of the iconic football comic.
The dawn of this new decade was one that Melchester Rovers would want to forget. The 80/81 season was far from their finest hour with the threat of relegation snapping at their heels all throughout the season and exits from the F.A. Cup and the European Cup leaving the trophy cabinet bare. For star striker Roy Race it couldn't be worse. His obsession with the team had caused a strain on his marriage and fractured his relationship with teammates like the hot-headed Vic Guthrie. And then there was an attempt on his life...
After being shot in December 1981, Roy lay in a coma for several weeks while Sir Alf Ramsey stepped into the dugout for Melchester. Life in a lower division beckons, but at least the Rovers will be the most stylish team on the pitch with their new Gola sponsored kits!

Q. Do you prefer reading on paper, Kindle or listening to an audiobook?
I prefer audiobooks. As someone constantly on the move between clinics, labs, and research meetings, audiobooks let me keep learning without slowing down. It’s like having a regenerative boost for the brain while I work on regenerating patients’ health! Being an auditory learner, I find I can absorb information while on the go.
Q. Do you have a favourite bookshop (and why that shop)?
Amazon is my go-to. I can order books while doing a quick grocery shop, all with a tap. With such a busy schedule, having everything at my fingertips—both books and groceries—keeps my work on track. Efficiency is key when you’re regenerating joints and ideas!
Many thanks to Paul for recommending a super selection of books! Please don't forget to check out Regeneration by Design: The science of superhuman ageing.
