Q. Do you have a favourite smart thinking book (and why that book)?
Rising Strong: The Reckoning. The Rumble. The Revolution. by Brené Brown. Description from Bookshop.org: (All links earn commission from purchases. Prices accurate at time of writing)
Rising Strong by Brene Brown: It’s about learning to be vulnerable and getting back up and facing life even after you fall. It advocates for and encourages our ability to learn and change no matter the circumstances. And it teaches how we can alter our reactions to things in a moment to achieve a different outcome.
Rising Strong: The Reckoning. The Rumble. The Revolution.
Three thousand years ago on a battlefield in ancient Palestine, a shepherd boy felled a mighty warrior with nothing more than a stone and a sling, and ever since then the names of David and Goliath have stood for battles between underdogs and giants. David's victory was improbable and miraculous. He shouldn't have won.
Or should he have?
In David and Goliath, Malcolm Gladwellchallenges how we think about obstacles and disadvantages, offering a new interpretation of what it means to be discriminated against, or cope with a disability, or lose a parent, or attend a mediocre school, or suffer from any number of other apparent setbacks.
Gladwell begins with the real story of what happened between the giant and the shepherd boy those many years ago. From there, David and Goliath examines Northern Ireland's Troubles, the minds of cancer researchers and civil rights leaders, murder and the high costs of revenge, and the dynamics of successful and unsuccessful classrooms--all to demonstrate how much of what is beautiful and important in the world arises from what looks like suffering and adversity.
In the tradition of Gladwell's previous bestsellers--The Tipping Point, Blink, Outliers and What the Dog Saw--David and Goliath draws upon history, psychology, and powerful storytelling to reshape the way we think of the world around us.

Q. What's the most recent smart thinking book you've read (and how would you rate it)?
The Daily Stoic: 366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance, and the Art of Living by Ryan Holiday. Description from Bookshop.org: (All links earn commission from purchases. Prices accurate at time of writing)
The Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday: which is about the revival of Stoicism by it’s original meaning, and how rather than the emotionless, rather bland reputation it currently has, it was originally an ancient philosophy derived from private letters and diaries of some of the most influential men of the Roman Empire and which speaks to much of what we strive to achieve today. It’s divided into the 365 days of the year, with a pearl of wisdom for each day. It’s a great book to check in with regularly. I would give it 5 stars.

Q. Do you prefer reading on paper, Kindle or listening to an audiobook?
I prefer reading on paper, although I do have a kindle and occasionally use that too if I need to travel light!
Q. Do you have a favourite bookshop (and why that shop)?
I enjoy second hand bookstores if I’m feeling like a spontaneous surprise read, but for books I intentionally choose to read, it’s usually my local book store or Amazon.
